Newborn Photography: 5 Things I Wish I Knew as a New Mum

Brisbane newborn photo

When I had my first baby, I was deep in the newborn haze—leaking, learning, and just trying to figure out which way was up. I knew I wanted photos, but I didn’t really know what to expect from a newborn photoshoot or how quickly those early weeks would pass.

Now, after photographing dozens of new families as a Brisbane newborn photographer and going through it twice myself, here’s what I wish I knew back then.

1. You don’t need to ‘bounce back’ before booking a newborn shoot

In those early days, I remember thinking, “Maybe I’ll wait until I feel more myself.” The truth? That version of you—tired, soft, in love—is worth remembering too.

The best newborn photos aren’t about perfection. They’re about presence. Whether you’re in leggings or the one nice dress that still fits, what matters most is being in the frame with your baby.

And if you’re worried about how you’ll look? I’ve got you. I photograph with softness, flattering light, and a whole lot of care—because I’ve been there.

2. Your baby doesn’t need to sleep the whole time

Let’s bust this myth: your baby does not need to be asleep for the entire session. Some babies snooze the whole time, others are wide-eyed and wriggly. Both are beautiful.

I take a relaxed, baby-led approach to newborn photography. That means we pause for feeds, cuddles, or nappy changes, and I capture the in-between moments too—tiny toes kicking, big yawns, the way your baby settles when they’re snuggled into your chest.

3. You’ll want more than just ‘the baby photos’

Before I had my son, I thought newborn photos were all about the baby. What I didn’t realise? The photos I treasure most now are the ones where we’re all together—those early moments as a family of three.

That’s why every newborn session I do includes plenty of family photos (siblings included!). You’ll get the beautiful close-ups of your bub, but also the photos where you're holding them, gazing at them, soaking it all in.

4. You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect house

I shoot newborn sessions in homes all across Brisbane, and I can tell you this: your house does not need to look like a magazine spread.

All I need is a bit of natural light and a comfy spot for you to cuddle your baby. I’ll guide you the whole way through, and I promise—you’ll be surprised how beautiful the everyday can look through the lens.

5. The window for newborn photos is shorter than you think

This part? I learned the hard way. Those curled-up, sleepy newborn photos are usually taken within the first 7–14 days—when your baby is still brand new and oh-so-tiny.

But let’s be honest: those first two weeks are chaos. That’s why I recommend booking your Brisbane newborn session while you’re still pregnant. I’ll pencil in your due date and leave room to adjust once baby arrives.
